2011 bmw 328 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. What bmw does best. introductionthe bmw 3 series cars are the quintessential bmws. They accelerate, turn and stop with remarkable agility and balance, without seriously compromising comfort or common sense. The 3 series sedans define the term sports sedan and remain an aspirational target for every luxury automaker, from acura to volvo.  the 3 series comprises a range of sedans, coupes, convertibles and wagons, with different engines, and a wide variety of options. All models share mechanical components and similarly compact exterior dimensions. We like the top models, but we also recommend the less-expensive 328i models. They have as much power as most drivers will ever need, and they deliver the same inherent goodness and most of the key features as the 335 models.  for 2011, all 3 series body styles get minor design changes.  for 2011, bmw 335i features a single turbo instead of a twin turbo, and a new performance tuned twin-turbo model called the 335is has been added. The 2011 bmw 335is is available with bmw's dual-clutch automated manual transmission (dct), which was previously only offered on the m3.  the bmw 335d features a new-age diesel engine that's as clean as any of its gasoline counterparts. Despite its improved fuel economy, it retains the sporting character that has long defined the 3 series line. The diesel generates a whopping 425 pound-feet of torque, and at 23 city/36 highway, it delivers the highest epa mileage ratings of any 3 series model. All-wheel drive is available, however, for improved traction in wintry conditions. Bmw sells more manual transmissions in this class than any manufacturer, and that says something about the type of drivers choosing the 3 series. Even the optional automatic transmission is tuned for crisp, sporty shifting. Handling response is sharp and precise, and braking capability is best in class.  bmw 328i models come with bmw's trademark 3. 0-liter straight six, and we found it's more than powerful enough for brisk acceleration and a sinfully good time. The upgrade turbo six in the 335i is one of the most viscerally satisfying engines in production.  exterior dimensions for all 3 series models are relatively compact, making them good cars for crowded city centers. The sports wagon adds substantial cargo space and utility. It's great for couples or families who often bring the dog, though it isn't available with the turbocharged engine. The 328i and 335i convertibles might be the sexiest 3s, with a fully automatic, one-button folding metal hardtop. The firmer sport suspension, optional with other body styles, comes standard on the coupe, and these are the lightest cars in the line. Some competitors offer more room, more power, better mileage or maybe better interiors for less money.  aside from subjective price-value analysis, we think the most noteworthy hitch in the 3 series is the downside of its many electronic gizmos. The sport package includes sporting suspension calibrations tuned by bmw's m performance division for the sedan, wagon and convertible, more heavily bolstered sport seats, sport steering wheel, shadowline exterior trim, increased top-speed limiter, and a wheel-performance tire upgrade.  safety features include front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact, front passenger side-impact airbags and full-cabin, curtain-type head protection airbags. The convertibles add knee airbags that help keep front passengers from sliding under the seat belts. Active safety features, designed to help the driver avoid collisions, include dynamic stability control and the latest generation antilock brakes. The abs preloads the brake pedal when the driver suddenly lifts off the gas pedal, and includes a feature that lightly sweeps the brake discs dry every 1. 5 seconds when it's raining. walkaroundfor 2011, all 3 series models get some minor styling changes.  2011 3 series coupes and convertibles are an inch longer in than the 2010 versions due to revisions to the front bumper and lower fascia. The twin-kidney grille is wider, the headlights add the led corona rings we become accustomed to seeing on the 5 series and other bmws, and there are now led brows above the headlights.  2011 3 series sedans and wagons get a bolder front end with a larger air intake, sharper lines on the hood, and more prominent side character lines. The headlights are reshaped for 2011. Models with xenon high-intensity discharge headlights now use the round corona rings as daytime running lights. At the rear, leds now adorn the redesigned taillights. The 3 series sedan has a new trunk shape for 2011, and the track is 0. 6 inch wider.  the new bmw 335is features a modified front end without fog lights to allow more air intake. Along the sides, it gets lower aero skirts. The rear features a unique bumper, black chrome exhaust tips, additional air ducting, and a black lower diffuser. The diffuser's shape helps air flow over the rear axle.  the 3 series sedan, wagon, coupe, and convertible all look different from one another, but they have a family appearance and are immediately recognizable as bmws.  the model line's high-tech theme is visible from the outside. Many models come with adaptive bi-xenon headlights that turn with the steering wheel to aim into a curve. All feature bmw's adaptive brake lights, which are based on the idea that drivers in the cars following a 3 series will know when the 3 is braking hard: the led lights illuminate more intensely, over a larger area, when the driver applies the brakes full-lock or when the abs operates.  all 3 series body styles ride a 108. 7-inch wheelbase, and by every exterior dimension, they're all within two inches of each other. In general, these are the largest 3 series cars ever. Most of the extra width and length translates into more interior space compared to previous generations, particularly in the back seat.  the sedan is the best seller, and perhaps most familiar to the motoring public. The coupe is a bit longer and lower than the sedan, and not as wide. With standard xenon headlamps, its front light clusters are smaller. The coupe's hood looks longer, and it's fashioned with a subtle dome that suggests a powerful engine underneath. The windshield flows into a roofline that's long and curved in a continuous arc, and lower than that on the sedan. With extensive use of plastic composite materials for parts such as the front fenders, the coupes are also the lightest cars in the li. All-new, with brilliant twin-turbo v8, new suspension. introductionthe 2009 bmw 7 series is a complete redesign, marking the beginning of the fifth generation of this legendary marque's flagship sedan. The 2009 7 series comes in 750i and 750li versions. The bmw 750li has a longer wheelbase, extended by 5. 5 inches over the 750i, offering a ride that's even more luxurious, hard as that might be to fathom.  the 2009 bmw 750li and 750i feature a new generation of v8 engine, with direct injection and twin turbocharging. This 4. 4-liter v8 makes 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, awesome numbers for an engine that small, thanks to the turbos. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode. Weight-efficient construction and innovative chassis technology contribute to superior driving dynamics that have come to be expected from a bmw, especially the high end models like the 7 series. However, despite the use of lighter chassis materials, the 750li gains 86 pounds, on account of more equipment, such as driver assistance systems and comfort related features.  both the exterior and interior have been redesigned for 2009. The 750li has its own roofline, and the silhouette is sleeker than ever. Option packages include convenience 1700); cold weather 800); camera 750); driver assistance 1350); luxury seating 2500); premium sound 2000); rear entertainment 2200); and sport 4900).  safety equipment includes an integrated abs with dynamic stability control including brake fade compensation, start-off assistant, brake drying, and brake stand-by features, with dynamic traction control and dynamic brake control. There is also bmw's advanced safety system with front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, and front and rear head protection system; and finally a tire pressure monitor. Active blind spot detection and lane departure warning is part of the optional driver assistance package. walkaroundredesigned for 2009, the bmw 7 series cars look sleek and expensive. The 750li has its own roofline, giving it a different profile from that of the shorter 750i.  the roofline of the 750li travels sensuously along with the rest of the car in order to keep it from looking like a stretched 750i with a long tail. The 750li roofline is longer to provide room in the rear passenger compartment. Bmw pays attention.  the 750li looks best from the side or three-quarters view. The hood is long but front overhang is short; that long wheelbase does that. The fenders are chiseled upward, nicely.  from the rear, there's little to say that this is a remarkable luxury car; it looks like any other car on the highway with its horizontal chrome strip and big taillights. A small lip on the trunk lid only adds accent to the car's lines when viewed from the side.  in front, the vertical bars on the kidney grille are spaced wider than those on other bmws, for distinction, but that doesn't really work. It doesn't make a car look more stylish by increasing the gap between its teeth. The 7 series has a massive trunk, measuring 17. 7 cubic inches for both models.  first, the good. Great interior lighting. World's best backup video camera, including sideview camera. The doors open way wide, for easy entry and exit. The screen with navigation and all its menus is very readable, at 10. 2 inches versus 8. 8 inches before. Small door pockets help little.  steering wheel audio controls, but no mute button. The electric seatbelt pretensioner annoyingly pretensioned us when we just needed to lean forward for visibility when pulling onto the highway.  bmw has re-invented the position of park with its transmission control on the center console, putting it where reverse is on other cars. We never did figure out how to listen to the radio and hear the navigation commands at the same time, unlike the blissfully easy to understand dodge we tested the previous week. We couldn't blow up the navigation map nor find streets that might or might not have been there. We were dismayed by the array of questions that had to be answered when we pressed menu. So many options we never knew we needed or wanted, all with strange names that didn't describe any function we know of. Bmw boasts repeatedly in its press kit that it's clear and intuitive. It is better than before. We've talked to owners who have learned how to operate idrive effectively and they like it. But we give idrive the big thumbs down. driving impressionbmw, in the 7 series at least, seems to suffer from a problem of ambition. The engine is brilliant, incredible. All that horsepower, torque and smoothness, and we got 19. 0 miles per gallon overall. Can't say enough good things about the engine. Not just the 400 horsepower, but 450 pound-feet of torque at 1800 rpm.  the suspension is nearly as flawless as the engine, whether cruising in a straight line on a rough road, or tossing the big beemer through curves. Bmws are known for that. The front suspension is all new for 2009, the first double-wishbone suspension ever in a bmw passenger car, believe it or not. The rear multi-link suspension is redesigned for 2009, with an innovated vertical link that bmw calls the integral system. The only problem is all those decisions. Using the driving dynamics control selector (located near the idrive controller and e-shift lever), the car will change its performance characteristics, in the areas of shock absorber firmness, throttle response, transmission shift characteristics, power steering assist level, and dynamic stability control points. The sport package also included the gorgeous 19-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, and active steering to tighten the aggressive cornering.  the six-speed automatic transmission seems over-engineered, or at least over-programmed. It insists on doing far too many things for the driver, in normal mode and with the ddc in normal. Basically, the transmission won't let the car glide. Around town, it feels like the emergency brake is on. Back of the throttle, and some program says: the driver wants to slow down. Virtually no hardware was carried over directly to the 2011 bmw 5 series from the previous models. But with no less than nine new models arriving all at once in the 2011 line, to a significant degree, bmw is starting over. Under the guidance of controversial american design director chris bangle during the past decade, bmw took an excursion into doing some very un-bmw things. Simultaneously, with the debut of the first-generation idrive system several model years ago, munich offered to the world the single most counter-intuitive, infuriating cockpit management system ever brought to market. Ever since that bleak debut, the revered company has been backtracking at a stubborn, no-we-never-screw-up rate. The broad line of new 2011 bmws, far from looking frumpy, has regained the aggressive, exciting enthusiasm that had been the company's trademark since long before these difficulties began. From 7 series to 5 series to 3 series, 2011 models are back to the reliable old bmw formula: same sausage, in three different lengths. As a luxury midsize sedan, the 5 will hit the sweet spot for many families that include a driver or two with a strong taste for performance accompanied by all the latest safety provisions.  in comparison with the previous 5 sedan, the 2011 version is two inches longer, with a three-inch longer wheelbase. That translates to one inch less frontal overhang than in any previous 5. This will certainly be helpful in tight parking situations, but far more than that, it give the 5 its stunning visual impact. With its forward-lunging shapes, muscular flanks, and low, road-hugging front end, the 5's appearance accurately communicates its racerly velocity and apex-strafing agility. Said agility is aided and abetted by the new 5's near-perfect 49/51 front/rear weight distribution. This package delivers levels of handling that have inherent stability, with no sudden surprises. The bmw representatives we spoke to describe the cabin as contemporary but warm, and so it is. The instrumentation is thorough and easy to use, and the seats are covered in either leatherette, for the 528i and 535i, or leather in the 550i. As has been the case from nearly the beginning, cloth interiors will not be imported to north america.  and somewhat surprisingly, comparing content to content in the 2011 5 series versus its predecessor, the 5 series furnishings represent a drop in prices. lineupthe 2011 bmw 5 series is available in three models: the bmw 528i 44,550) with 3. 0-liter inline-6, the bmw 535i 49,600) with more powerful 3. 0-liter inline-5, and the 550i 59,700) with 4. 4-liter v8.  the 528i and 535i come standard with leatherette upholstery, automatic dual-zone air conditioning with micron air filter, 205-watt am/fm/cd/mp3 audio with 12 speakers, redundant steering wheel controls, pre-wired for satellite radio and cd changer, idrive, power moonroof, bluetooth, wood trim. Active cruise control adjusts speed to maintain safe interval to car ahead, with provision to stop the vehicle completely if required; collision warning indicates an imminent collision, primes the brakes for full stopping power, and will automatically apply the brakes. Active blind spot detection monitors safe lane reentry when overtaking another car; a backup visual signal and a recognizable vibration in the steering wheel provide further warning. Lane departure warning monitors lane markers; when a lane change begins and turn signals are not activated, the system warns the driver with vibration in the steering wheel. Automated headlights follow curves in winding roads, and automated high-beam controls switch high beams on and off as required when drawing close to another car or meeting oncoming cars up to 440 yards ahead. Adaptive brake light system flashes bright taillights when abs is engaged or brakes are applied strongly. Night vision with pedestrian detection, provides early detection of objects and pedestrians in the night; warning is provided by the control display and is displayed on the inner surface of the windshield if fitted with head-up display.
